We spent last week in the Ardennes, far far away from the platteland of the Netherlands. But to get there it actually took us longer than we had expected. Or let’s say longer than the kids were willing to sit in a car without a proper break. That’s how we came to stop for a sunny afternoon at the Rivierenhof in Antwerpen: The perfect spot to catch up on some fresh air and move with the leaves in the wind!

How lucky my husband likes to pick places by looking at them on Google Maps instead of researching all the parent-travelling-blogs for the latest must-go-to recommendations for your next city trip. Otherwise we probably wouldn’t have landed at the Rivierenhof for our lunch break, a wide-spread and inviting park in Antwerpen.

It seems like everyone is hanging out there – the local kids in their school uniforms, eager groups of senior boule players, couples enjoying their lazy afternoon together and, well, families of all sizes and backgrounds.

Once we let the kids run wild, we could all relax and soak up the beautiful autumn colors: Looking for treasures on the way, feeding steel-made giraffes, and visiting the local kinderboerderij just like we would do at home.

Just when we headed back to the car, Sophia asked me to look up on my phone how many kilometers she had walked today. That usually means she’s tired 🙂 So when we got back into the car for the second leg of our car drive, she fell asleep in an instance. Resting to take the ‘mountains’ of the Ardennes by storm the next morning …
